Biol. 24(5): 507-518 Plant V-ATPase The vacuolar proton translocating ATPase (V-ATPase) is an essential protein complex present in all eukaryotes. It consists of 13 different subunits in plants and functions as ATP-driven rotary motor. V-ATPases are essential for the cytosolic pH homeostasis, the generation of a proton motive force and the pH-controlled termination of receptorligand interactions within secretory and endocytotic pathways. Especially in plants, V-ATPases are also involved in developmental events like cell expansion and mechanisms of stress defense like vacuolar sequestration of toxic compounds. Motivation
